The Communicator made an appearance in the Star Trek: The Original Series, and is essentially a futuristic mobile phone. In addition to connecting with others, the device can also be used as an emergency beacon, much on the same lines as a transponder.
The Wand Company has built an exact replica of the Communicator, which doubles up as a Bluetooth headset for your smartphone as well as a portable speaker. One will be able to simply answer calls by flipping open the antenna grille and it also comes with a wireless charging port of its own. The company has built the Communicator using structured-light 3D scanning to get the look absolutely right.
While the Communicator looks like a bulky Motorola flip phone from the past, it will hardly matter for Star Trek fans. The Wand Company plans to unveil the device at Comic-Con later this week in San Diego, and it will go on sale in January next year. Pre-orders for the Communicator have kicked off on Star Trek shop with a price tag of $149.95 or Rs 9,500 approximately.
The Star Trek universe is filled with futuristic technology, and we are seeing many of them inspiring the companies today.
